Women's Tennis Rallies to Win Second Straight Match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Ali Sollecito's (Taunton, Mass.) three-set win at No.1 singles capped off a comeback and lifted the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Lesley in non-league action Wednesday night.

Winners of back-to-back matches for the first time this season the Leopards improve to 3-9 while the Lynx fall to 2-6.

Lesley took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The Lynx got an 8-2 win at No. 3 as sophomore Sara Stanton (Manchester, Mass.) and freshman Rachel Mingingham (Hopedale, Mass.) defeated sophomore Jasmine Andrade (Dorchester, Mass.) and senior Mackenzie Jones (Granville, Mass.). At No. 1, seniors Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) bested seniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.), 8-3. Sollecito teamed with sophomore Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) to give Wentworth a point at No. 2, winning, 8-5, over sophomore Maddie Abbott (Portland, Maine) and junior Jessica Russo (Watertown, Mass.).

Junior Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.) defeated sophomore Tea Ryder Gloucester, Mass.) at No. 6, 6-1, 6-2, to even the match at 2-all and Briggs swept Abbott, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 to give Wentworth a 3-2 lead. Pereira evened the match at 3-all when she defeated Webb in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Wentworth took the lead for good and clinched the match with wins at No. 5 and No. 1, respectively. At No. 5, McGibbon defeated Stanton, 6-3, 6-3, before Sollecito needed three sets (6-0, 6-7 (7-9), 6-0) to defeat Kiddie and give the Leopards the win.With the match in hand, Russo defeated Andrade at No. 4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6.

The Leopards close out their fall season at Nichols on Friday.
