BOSTON, Mass. – A strong second half, led by five straight goals and an overall 8-1 run, led the Western New England Golden Bears men's lacrosse team (4-5, 1-1 CCC) to an 11-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology (8-3, 1-1 CCC) Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards opened the scoring early in the opening frame as freshman Brendan Kroll (Wakefield, R.I.) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 13:04 mark. Junior Jack Houlden (Peabody, Mass.) knotted the score for WNE at the 10:11 mark before the two teams continued their defensive battle into the second frame.
- Graduate student Brian Madden (Brookfield, Conn.) scored to give the Golden Bears a 2-1 edge at the 11:30 mark of the second quarter before junior Jared Hiller (North Andover, Mass.) tied the score back up for Wentworth with a goal at the 6:16 mark. WNE tallied once more with just under two minutes to go, giving the visitors a 3-2 edge at the break.
- The Golden Bears went on a 5-0 run in the third quarter, featuring goals by five different goal-scorers, before the Leopards stopped the run with a goal by freshman Gabe Cobham (Westbury, N.Y.) at the 6:20 mark, marking an 8-3 score.
- The Golden Bears scored twice more in the third frame to extend their lead to 10-3 before Madden capped the scoring in the fourth with one more tally, marking an 11-3 final score.
- Junior Tom Gardner (West Windsor, N.J.) made 15 saves and scooped up five ground balls in between the pipes for the Leopards.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the 17th all-time matchup between the two teams.
