Women's Soccer Edged by Johnson & Wales

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophia Warburton scored a pair of goals as the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team edged Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-1, in Conference of New England play Wednesday afternoon.

With the win the Wildcats improve to 5-7-1 overall and 3-2-0 in CNE play while the Leopards fall to 5-3-5 (0-3-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Johnson & Wales had an early opportunity after a corner kick at the 40 second mark but Wentworth's defense prevented a scoring chance.
• At the 8:55 mark, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead as Jessica Lee sent a pass to Warburton, who lofted a shot from the right side to the upper left corner.
• In the 17th minute, Jordan Dahan nearly tied the game for the Leopards but her shot nicked the crossbar and, in the 43rd minute, Brooke Finlay's chance was saved by Kyla Stamilio.
• Lily Carlson got the equalizer with 1:23 left in the half on a heads-up play. Finlay lofted a pass to Brianna Reid in the box. With an empty net, Reid put a shot towards the goal mouth where Carlson beat a defender to the right side and tapped the shot in for her eighth goal of the season.
• Warburton put Johnson & Wales ahead at the 53:10 mark when she took a pass from Jamie Davies and put a shot inside the right corner.
• Shyla Kulesza made 10 saves for the Black & Gold.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

• Today was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
