BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) scored on a rebound with 50 seconds left to snap a 2-all tie and lift the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action played on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Beacons improve to 7-4-0, while the Leopards see their two-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 4-6-2 on the season.
The hosts got on the board first when freshman Mary Annon took a direct kick from 20 yards out on the right side and struck a high shot that went to the upper middle. UMass Boston tied the game at 1-all at the 18:36 mark when junior Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass.) served a corner kick from the right mark that junior Brittany Castillo (Yarmouth, Mass.) flicked a header to the low left side.
Wentworth took a 2-1 lead at 33:18 when senior Jenelle Wolff (Lynnfield, Mass.) sent a pass across the box that was collected by freshman Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) and put home. However, UMass Boston would tie the score just 2:04 later when freshman KK DaCosta (Brockton, Mass.) sent a pass in front to junior Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.). Ledin's shot took a high bounce off the turf and found the back of the net.
Despite having chances to score, neither team would break the stalemate until Ledin streaked in along the left side and fired a shot that junior Nicole Leahey (Warwick, R.I.) made a diving stop on. The rebound came out to Andrews, who put home the rebound to give the Beacons the lead. The Leopards put pressure on in an attempt to tie the score, however couldn't get a shot off.
Junior Kristen Spain (Quincy, Mass.) made four saves for the Beacons while Leahey made six for the Black & Gold. UMass Boston held an 18-13 shot advantage and were awarded the only four corner kicks of the contest.
Both teams are in action on Saturday. UMass Boston returns to Little East play, hosting Western Connecticut while Wentworth resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Western New England.
