McCann’s Overtime Winner Lifts Women’s Lacrosse Past Concordia Wisconsin
The Leopards scored two goals late in the fourth to send the game to overtime before Maggie McCann’s OT tally secures the win
GEORGETOWN, Texas – Maggie McCann's overtime tally lifted the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 victory over Concordia Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon. McCann tallied four goals to lead the team while Sydney Vega added three goals and one assist. Grace Del Pilar tallied two goals and two assists and Grace Sweet scored a pair of goals. Lily Cohen made 14 saves to improve to 2-1 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wentworth took the lead early in the game with McCann netting her first goal of the game just over 30 seconds into the contest with an assist from Tessa Wilkie. The Falcons evened the score with an unassisted goal from Katelyn Cardinale before Del Pilar's first of the afternoon put the Leopards back in front 2-1. Concordia Wisconsin scored four unanswered goals to close the first quarter with a 5-2 lead.
- Claire Geidel extended the Falcons' lead to 6-2 before Vega's unassisted goal cut the lead to three goals. Back-to-back goals put Concordia Wisconsin ahead 8-3 late in the half. Sweet's woman-up tally from Del Pilar made it 8-4 before Sweet netted another goal with 48 seconds remaining to make it an 8-5 game at the half.
- The third quarter was the lowest scoring frame of the game. Addie Kiphuth and Vega added unassisted goals while Cardinale scored a woman-up goal to give the Falcons a 9-7 lead heading into the final frame.
- Cardinale added another tally early in the fourth as the Falcons' lead grew to 10-7. McCann scored her second of the contest with an assist from Vega, but Emily Robertson answered a minute later to restore the three-goal lead for the Falcons. Vega scored from a free position attempt and McCann netted her hat trick goal with 4:19 to play, making it an 11-10 game. Del Pilar's unassisted tally with 1:57 remaining tied the game and sent it into overtime.
- It took just 25 seconds into the overtime period for McCann to find the back on the net to complete the comeback for the Leopards and give them their second win in three days. Del Pilar had the assist on the game-winning goal.
