Women’s Lacrosse Downs Southwestern
Six Leopards get on the scoresheet, Grace Sweet and Maggie McCann each tally a goal and an assist
GEORGETOWN, Texas – Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season with a 9-5 victory over the Southwestern Pirates on Tuesday night. Grace Sweet tallied a goal and an assist on four shots on goal to go with two ground balls. Grace Del Pilar, Tessa Wilkie, and Addie Kiphuth added two goals apiece. Anna Maggie McCann added a goal and an assist and Anna Faberlle rounded out the scoring with a goal. Lily Cohen gets her first win of the year, making six saves. Megan Cassady made two saves on three shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pirates opened the scoring behind Nia Trevillion's goal with 9:04 to play in the first quarter. The Leopards got a late tally from Del Pilar to even the score at 1-1 after one. The second quarter was a defensive battle as the teams remained tied heading into the final five minutes of the half. Wilkie's unassisted goal gave Wentworth a 2-1 lead before Wilkie scored her second of the game with 31 seconds to go, giving the Leopards a 3-1 lead at the break. Cohen made four first half saves.
- Wentworth came out firing in the second half, scoring 46 seconds into the half with Kiphuth's unassisted tally. Faberlle added an unassisted goal less than a minute later to make it 5-1 to the Leopards. McCann extended the lead to 6-1 with Sydney Vega getting the assist.
- The Pirates scored three straight goals, including a woman-up goal on a free position shot to cut the lead to 6-4. Sweet gave the Leopards a bit of breathing room heading into the fourth with a goal with under two minutes to play in the third.
- Del Pilar's unassisted tally restored the four-goal lead for Wentworth with 11:32 to play in the game. Grace Van Dinter scored with less than five to play, cutting the lead to 8-5. Kiphuth's woman-up goal from Sweet with 29 seconds to play secured the win for the Leopards. Wentworth had a 10-6 edge in draw controls while shots were even at 23-23. The Leopards went 7-7 on clears.
