WENHAM, Mass. – Five goals apiece for Caroline Piorkowski and Kaitlyn Mini helped the Gordon Fighting Scots women's lacrosse team fend off Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 13-9 score in Conference of New England play on Thursday night.
The Scots pick up their first conference win of the season and improve to 2-13 overall. The Leopards fall to 5-10 overall (1-7 CNE).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Piorkowski struck just under three minutes into the evening to give the Scots an initial 1-0 edge, Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie knotted the score for the Leopards at the 7:28 mark. Piorkowski rippled twine twice more for Gordon before Grace Del Pilar marked a 3-2 game with a tally at the 1:43 mark. A goal off a free position shot with 41 seconds left gave the Scots a 4-2 advantage after one.
- After Piorkowski extended Gordon's lead to 5-2 just over three minutes into the second frame, Gunning-Lavoie found twine once more at the 7:10 mark to mark a 5-3 score. The Scots capitalized again with just over three minutes to play in the quarter to hold a 6-3 lead at the half.
- Gunning-Lavoie and Grace Sweet each struck for the Leopards 30 seconds apart early in the third frame to cut the deficit to 6-5. However, the Scots ended the quarter with four straight tallies in a span of 5:38 to hold a 10-5 advantage.
- Wentworth dwindled their deficit to 10-6 as Aliviah MacCormack scored at the 12:40 mark of the fourth quarter. Mini tallied for the Scots three times in the wanning moments of the frame, marking a 13-6 score. Del Pilar and Tessa Wilkie scored 30 seconds apart for the Leopards before Kaitlyn Kozak (:06) added another, marking a 13-9 game.
- Between the pipes, Hayden Saunders made 14 saves and scooped up three ground balls. Mia Zoghbi grabbed a game-high six ground balls while Del Pilar caused a pair of turnovers.
