Women’s Basketball Falls to Fitchburg in Season Opener
Mia Luna Zayas led the Leopards in scoring in her collegiate debut while Taylor Garabedian tallied 14 boards to lead the team.

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to the Fitchburg Falcons 54-38 in Saturday's season opener. Mia Luna Zayas led the team with 13 points and three steals. Taylor Garabedian grabbed a team-high 14 boards while Tita Rana scored 12 with two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Fitchburg led 7-6 after a low-scoring first quarter. Garabedian and Zayas scored the points for the Leopards as they went into the break trailing by one.
- Garabedian's bucket a minute into the game followed by a McPhillips triple gave Wentworth the 11-9 lead. Zayas answered Fitchburg bucket with a jumper to regain the lead before Tita Rana's three made it 15-12 to the visitors. Kaelynn Tanner's three tied the game at 15 and the Falcons took a 23-18 lead into the halftime break.
- Fitchburg stretched the lead to 11 three minutes into the second hlf. Elise Ayer broke a scoreless drought for Wentworth with a jumper to make it 31-20 with just under four minutes to play in the third. The Leopards got the deficit to eight after the third quarter thanks to a three from Rana.
- Monet Augmon's free throw gave Fitchburg a 13-point advantage with seven minutes to play as Wentworth made a push to get back into the game. The Leopards had their chances but couldn't knock down shots and the Falcons pushed the lead to 15 points late. The hosts held on to win 54-38 in the season opener.
