Second Half Surge Helps Western New England Roar Past Women's Basketball
Golden Bears open the second half on a 14-2 run to pull away from the Leopards, 78-46
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Wentworth Institute of Technology's Maddy Foster led all scorers with 19 points, however, Western New England broke away from the Leopards as the Golden Bears took a 78-46 decision over the Leopards in Conference of New England play.
With the win the Golden Bears, who are receiving votes in this week's WBCA Division III Top 25, improve to 16-1 overall and 9-1 in league play, while the Leopards fall to 2-15 (0-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the score tied at 2-all, Wentworth got a jumper from Samantha Jones and a three pointer from Brianna Carroll to jump out to a 7-2 lead. The Leopards led, 11-8, after a Foster layup before Caitlyn Hunt hit a jumper and Nora Young hit a three, giving Western New England a 13-11 lead after the first quarter.
- The Golden Bears opened the second quarter on an 8-3 run and led, 21-14, on two free throws from Lilly Hedge. Five points from Foster sandwiched around a layup from Hedge made it 23-19 with 4:12 left and another three from Foster eventually brought the Black & Gold with three (25-22) with 2:45 to go in the half. Tita Rana followed with a jumper with just under two minutes left, pulling Wentworth to within one, however, the hosts used back-to-back three pointers to take a 31-24 lead at the break.
- Using a 14-2 run to open the third quarter, Western New England took a 45-26 lead with 5:53 left on a Shaina Cooney three-point play. Samantha Jones ended the run with a jumper 12 seconds later. Nine straight points from the golden Bears extended the lead to 54-28 with Amoddio hitting a jumper with 2:26 to make it 54-30. The hosts led, 57-32, after three quarters of play.
- Wentworth opened the fourth quarter with a 12-7 spurt and trimmed the lead to 64-44 on a Carroll layup. The Golden Bears responded with a 14-2 run to extend the lead.
- Hedge led Western New England with 15 points, while Sophie Hedge added 12.
- Amoddio added seven points for the Leopards, with Jones chipping in six. Garabedian grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today was the 31st all-time meeting between the two teams.
