Defensive Third Quarter Helps Endicott Get Past Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine) came off the bench to score 21 points and grab eight rebounds to help the Endicott College women's basketball team to a 55-45 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Thursday night.

With the win the Gulls improve to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 4-9 (1-6).

The Leopards would take a 5-4 lead midway through the opening quarter on a jumper from senior Rachael Camara (Fall River, Mass.). Endicott responded with an 8-0 run and took a 13-5 lead with 50 seconds left on a transition layup from senior Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.) with 50 seconds left. On Wentworth's next possession Camara converted a layup to cut the lead to 13-7 after one quarter.

Endicott would take a pair of 10-point leads, including when Cuddy forced a turnover and fed sophomore Gabriella Coppolla (Watertown, Mass.) on the fast break with 4:20 left. Wentworth scored the next seven points and pulled within three on two Camara free throws with 1:04 left but Shaw's two from the charity stripe made it a 26-21 game at the break.

Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter and the Gulls would hold the Leopards to just 7.1 percent from the floor (1-for-14) and outscored the hosts, 12-3, to take a 38-24 lead. Wentworth pulled within seven on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter, however would not get any closer down the stretch.

In addition to Shaw's 21 points, Cuddy added six points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks, and four steals. Senior Caity Lowry (Quincy, Mass.) also grabbed a dozen rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. The Gulls owned a 50-33 rebounding edge and held the Leopards to 25 percent shooting from the floor.

Camara scored 24 points in the loss to go along with nine rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Senior Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) scored seven points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had four steals for Wentworth.

Both teams continue CCC play on Saturday. Wentworth is at Salve Regina and Endicott is at Gordon.
