MIT Sweeps Softball in Midweek Doubleheader
The Leopards fell 6-1 in game before dropping game two 3-1
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell in both games against the MIT Engineers in Wednesday's doubleheader. The Leopards fall to 4-19 this season with a 2-6 mark in conference play.
GAME 1: MIT 6, Wentworth 1
Kelsey Medalia tallied two hits while Brianna Miller recorded one hit and one RBI. Abby Delia scored one run and had one hit, and Kyla Igawa added one hit. Julie Schriver threw 5.0 innings with six strikeouts, falling to 3-9 this season. Abby Austen went 2.0 innings on the mound.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schriver threw a scoreless first with one strikeout. Miller drew a walk and moved to second before stealing third but was left stranded.
- MIT put two runners on to open the third before Ava Ladd doubled down the left field line to bring in both runners and give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Engineers brought in another run behind Lauren Sundquist's RBI single before a triple from Holland Poe made it 5-0 to the visitors. Schriver struck out two hitters to end the frame.
- The Leopards put two on in the bottom of the third but could not capitalize and left both runners stranded. MIT tacked on one run in the fourth to push the lead to 6-0.
- Schriver struck out two hitters to escape a jam with runners on second and third to keep it a 6-0 game. The Leopards went down in order in the bottom of the fifth.
- Austen took over on the mound for the sixth and threw a scoreless frame. The Leopards loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the inning before Miller was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and make it 6-1. Three runners were left stranded as the game moved to the seventh.
- Neither side scored in the seventh and MIT took game 6-1.
GAME 2: MIT 3, Wentworth 1
Miller tallied one hit and scored one run while Lauren Trostel added one RBI. Jasmine Feliciano, Igawa, Medalia, and Linnea Carlson each tallied one hit. Quincy Bolduc also tallied one hit. Julia Malowitz threw 7.0 innings with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Engineers opened the scoring in the first inning from a sacrifice infield fly from Ava Ladd. Malowitz forced a flyout to end the frame and bring the offense to the plate.
- Miller hit a leadoff double to right center before Feliciano singled to right to put runners on the corners. Feliciano stole second and Miller scored on Trostel's RBI groundout to tie the game.
- Malowitz struck out two hitters in a scoreless second inning to keep the game tied. The Engineers nearly took the lead in the third inning but Miller's throw from center field and Trostel's tag at the plate kept the game even 1-1.
- The defense helped Malowitz throw another 1-2-3 frame in the fourth, but the Leopards could not take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. The game moved to the sixth tied 1-1 after a scoreless fifth.
- MIT loaded the bases and took a 2-1 lead after a hit by pitch. Olivia Scarpaci's sac fly made it 3-1 to the Engineers. The Leopards battled but could not get back into the game, falling 3-1 in game two.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 8th and 9th all-time meeting between the teams.
