Softball Battles Western New England in Doubleheader
The Leopards fell 3-1 in game one before dropping game two 5-4 on Saturday afternoon
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell to the Western New England Golden Bears in both games of the Saturday doubleheader at Sweeney Field. Wentworth falls to 4-17 this season and 2-6 in conference play.
GAME 1:
Kyla Igawa went 2-3 with one RBI and Jasmine Feliciano scored the Leopards' lone run. Linnea Carlson, Quincy Bolduc, and Lauren Trostel each recorded one hit. Julia Malowitz threw 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and Maddy Longoria threw 2.0 frames and allowed just two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Malowitz started well, striking out two batters in a 1-2-3 first inning. The Golden Bears took the lead in the second inning, loading the bases before driving in two runs to jump in front.
- Carlson tallied a hit in the second but was left stranded as the game moved to the third. The visitors tacked on another run in the third to push the lead to 3-0. Malowitz recorded another strikeout, bringing her total to three on the afternoon.
- Feliciano hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Igawa then singled to right to bring in Feliciano and make it 3-1. Malowitz threw a scoreless fourth to keep the Leopards within two runs. Wentworth could not cut further into the lead as the game moved to the fifth inning.
- Malowitz recorded another strikeout in the fifth and escaped a jam with two on and two out to keep Wentworth within two runs. Longoria entered the game in the sixth and got two quick outs before the Golden Bears put two runners on. Longoria got out of the inning to keep the deficit at 3-1.
- Longoria threw another scoreless inning to bring the Wentworth offense back to the plate for another chance to get back into the game. Bolduc reached on an error and moved to second with two outs but was left stranded and the Leopards fell 3-1 in game one.
GAME 2:
Jenna Roche and Kelsey Medalia both went 2-4 with one run and one RBI. Lauren Trostel added one run, one hit, and one RBI. Abby Delia and Linnea Carlson each had one hit and Quincy Bolduc went 2-3 at the plate. Julie Schriver went 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts, falling to 3-8 this season. Maddy Longoria threw 2.0 innings with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schriver threw a scoreless first inning and the Leopards took the lead in the bottom half of the frame after Trostel's two-out double to left center scored Feliciano. Roche followed with a single to left that brought in Trostel to make it 2-0 Wentworth.
- The hits kept coming as Medalia drilled an RBI double to left center to score Roche and pushed the lead to 3-0. Delia then hit an RBI single to right center to bring in Medalia and the lead grew to four runs.
- Western New England got one back in the third inning, but Schriver pitched well, striking out three hitters between the second and third innings. The Golden Bears put runners on the corners with two outs in the fourth before Marley Rodriguez hit an RBI single to make it a 4-2 game. Schriver recorded another strikeout to end the inning and keep Wentworth in front by two.
- Schriver struck out two hitters in the fifth to keep Wentworth in the lead. The Golden Bears loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning before Olivia Lugo's RBI single made it 4-3. Riley Kane drew a walk to tie the game before Schriver got a big strikeout to end the frame.
- The Leopards went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, sending the game to the seventh tied 4-4. Alyssa Ferrioulo hit a leadoff double in the seventh and Longoria entered the game for Schriver. Western New England moved the runner to third, but Longoria escaped the inning to bring the Wentworth offense back to the plate. The Leopards went down in order and the game moved to extra innings.
- Nicolina Salanto hit a two-out RBI single to put the Golden Bears in front 5-4 in the top of the eighth. The Golden Bears held on to complete the comeback and sweep the doubleheader.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 39th and 40th all-time meeting between the teams.
