Softball Splits Doubleheader with Curry
The Leopards held off the Colonels in game two to earn a split in the Sunday doubleheader
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell 3-0 in game one to the Curry Colonels before winning the second game 9-5 to split the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Wentworth moves to 4-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Curry finishes the day 6-9 overall and 1-3 in league action.
GAME 1: Curry 3, Wentworth 0 (8 Innings)
Jasmine Feliciano went 3-4 and Lauren Trostel went 2-3 at the plate. Kyla Igawa tallied a double in two plate appearances. Julia Malowitz fell to 1-5 this season after throwing 8.0 innings with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Igawa caught a runner stealing third and Malowitz recorded her first strikeout of the afternoon in a scoreless first. Wentworth went down in order in the bottom of the first. Malowitz threw a clean second to bring the offense back to the plate. Trostel hit a leadoff single and advanced to third but was left stranded as the game moved to the third still scoreless.
- Malowitz and the Leopards' defense kept Curry off the board through four frames, but the host's offense left another runner stranded through four innings.
- Igawa drew a leadoff walk, Trostel doubled to left to put runners on second and third, but both were left stranded and the game went to the fifth still tied.
- Curry had two on with two outs in the fifth, but Malowitz escaped the jam with Lefkowski catching a flyout to center to keep the visitors off the board. The Leopards could not open the scoring in the bottom half, and it went to the sixth scoreless.
- Brianna Miller and Abby Delia both made great catches in the sixth to retire the Colonels down in order. Igawa hit a leadoff double to right center and Trostel drew a walk to put two on. Medalia moved the runners to second and third, but both runners were left stranded once again.
- Malowitz struck out two in the seventh to keep the shutout going and bring the offense back to the plate. Wentworth could not get on the board and the game went to extras.
- Curry took the lead in the eighth with Morgan Saraceno scoring on a throwing error. The Colonels tacked on two more runs to take a 3-0 lead. The Leopards could not find a way back into the game and fell 3-0 in game one.
Lexi Lefkowski and Lauren Trostel went 3-4, scoring three runs combined. Jenna Roche went 3-3 with one run and one RBI while Linnea Carlson tallied three RBI and went 2-4. Julie Schriver improved to 3-6 this season after throwing 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. Julia Malowitz went 1.0 to close the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schriver threw a scoreless first frame. Wentworth loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but left all three runners stranded. Schriver kept the Colonels off the board in the second with the visitors leaving a runner on third. Roche singled to shortstop to put a runner on and nmoved to second on a bunt before Feliciano brought her in with a single to right center, giving the Leopards a 1-0 lead after two innings.
- The Colonels went down in order in the top of the third with Schriver striking out one batter to keep Wentworth in front. Trostel hit a leadoff single and stole second before scoring on Roche's single to left center to make it 2-0 Wentworth. Carlson singled to left to score Delia and pushed the lead to 3-0.
- Curry loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but Schriver got a big strikeout to end the inning and keep the Colonels off the board. Lefkowski hit a leadoff double and moved to third on Igawa's single to left. Lefkowski scored as Igawa stole second to give the Leopards a 4-0 lead. Delia brought in Igawa with a single up the middle, stretching the advantage to five. Carlson's RBI groundout and an RBI from Bolduc made it 7-0 Leopards after four.
- Curry got on the board in the top of the sixth with three quick runs. The Colonels cut it to 7-5 after Olivia Roy's ground-rule double brought in a pair of runs. The Leopards escaped the inning with two-run lead as Curry left two runners on.
- Trostel drilled a leadoff solo shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth to put Wentworth in front 8-5. Delia scored from Carlson's RBI single to make it 9-5 heading into the seventh.
- Malowitz came in for the bottom of the seventh and threw a scoreless frame to earn the split for the Leopards.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 59th & 60th all-time meeting between the teams.
