Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Johnson & Wales
The Leopards fell 7-1 in game one before earning the split with a 5-2 victory in game two
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team split the Saturday doubleheader against the Johnson & Wales (RI) Wildcats. The Leopards fell 7-1 in game one and earned the split with a 5-2 win in game two.
GAME 1:
Lauren Trostel went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Kyla Igawa added one hit and one run while Quincy Bolduc added one hit. Julie Schriver threw 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and Abby Austen went 0.2 innings with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trostel brought in Igawa with a double to left center to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jessica Forneiro tied the game in top of the third with a single up the middle to score Jadyn Torres.
- Schriver got out of a bases loaded jam with a big strikeout to bring the Leopards' offense back to the plate with the game tied.
- After a single from Igawa, Trostel recorded her second double of the game to put runners on second and third. The Wildcats escaped the jam with Jillian Reed getting a strikeout and forcing a groundout to send the game to the fourth still tied.
- Schriver threw a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout ending the frame. The Leopards went down in order, sending the game into the fifth inning tied at 1-1.
- The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a two-out RBI single from Ashley Bergeron before Schriver ended the frame with another strikeout. Reed threw a 1-2-3 inning and the game moved to the sixth.
- The Wildcats tacked on another run with two outs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Abby Austen entered the game for Schriver before Mady Lyons drilled a two-run shot to left center to extend the Wildcats' lead to 5-1. Wentworth went down in order heading into the final inning.
- Gabby Bellamore doubled to left to score two runs, giving Johnson & Wales a 7-1 lead in the seventh inning. The Leopards went down in order and fell 7-1 in game one of the doubleheader.
GAME 2:
Igawa went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI while Abby Delia went 2-3. Trostel went 1-2 with one run and one RBI. Lexi Lefkowski and Quincy Bolduc each added one hit and one run. Julia Malowitz earned her first win of the season after pitching a complete game with three strikeouts and two earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats had a runner on third, but Malowitz escaped the first with a strikeout to end the frame. Wentworth went down in order, sending the game to the second scoreless. Both pitchers threw scoreless frames in the second and third innings, sending the game to fourth tied 0-0.
- Mady Lyons opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left center, giving Johnson & Wales a 1-0 lead. Malowitz retired the next two batters before Ashley Bergeron doubled the Wildcats' lead with a solo homer to left center.
- Igawa hit a leadoff single in the bottom half of the inning and moved to third after Delia's single. Carlson drove in Igawa to get the Leopards on the board, but Wentworth left two runners stranded to end the frame.
- Malowitz threw a scoreless fifth to bring the offense back out. With two on, the Wildcats made a pitching change, bringing Reed into the game. Igawa sent one deep to left center to bring in Lefkowski and Bolduc and give Wentworth a 3-2 lead. Trostel followed with a double to left center, scoring Igawa. Medalia brought in Trostel, pushing the lead to 5-2 through five innings.
- Another scoreless inning by Malowitz, including one strikeout, kept the Leopards' lead at three. Reed recorded two strikeouts to retire the side in order, sending the game to the seventh inning.
- Malowitz pitched yet another scoreless inning, earning her first win of the season. The Leopards get the split with a 5-2 victory in game two.
THE SERIES
- Today was the first and second all-time meetings between the teams.
