Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Brandeis
The Black & Gold fell in both games to Brandeis in the home opening doubleheader
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team fell in a pair of games to the Brandeis Judges in the Leopards' home opening games on Saturday afternoon. Wentworth falls to 1-11 on the season.
GAME 1: Brandeis 11, Wentworth 6
Kyla Igawa and Kelsey Medalia went 3-4 and combined for three RBI while Quincy Bolduc added two hits, one run, and one RBI. Abby Delia, Brianna Miller, and Lauren Trostel each added one hit and one run. Maddy Longoria fell to 0-2 this season after 5.0 innings with two strikeouts. Abby Austen threw 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brandeis took the lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Taryn Rainey. Dylan Yamamura brought in a second run with a single run to double the Judges' lead.
- The Leopards answered in the second with Jasmine Feliciano bringing in Miller to get Wentworth on the board. Igawa's RBI single drove in two runs to put Wentworth in front. Bolduc tallied an RBI in the third to make it a 4-2 game.
- The Judges responded in the fifth with three-run homer to center from Bells Burdenski to make it 5-4. Brandeis tacked on two more in the frame to lead 7-4 after five innings.
- Burdenski's RBI double and Yamamura's RBI single stretched Brandeis' lead to 9-4 in the top of the sixth. Delia brought in Trostel to cut it to four runs before Medalia's RBI single up the middle scored Delia, making it a 9-6 game.
- The Judges put the game to bed in the seventh with a pair of runs, securing an 11-6 victory in the opening game of the afternoon.
GAME 2: Brandeis 13, Wentworth 9
Feliciano went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI in game two. Igawa went 2-3 with four RBI to lead the team and added one run. Bolduc, Delia, and Trostel tallied two hits apiece and Miller scored two runs. Julie Schriver fell to 1-5 on the year after 5.1 innings. Schriver struck out two with seven earned runs. Austen struck out one in 0.2 innings. Mikaela Martinez and Longoria also saw time on the mound for the Leopards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jordan Wallace hit a grand slam to deep center to give the Judges' a 4-0 lead before Katie Baydian's RBI pushed the lead to five. Erin Hunt and Brooke Boehmer each brought in one run as the lead grew to 7-0 after one inning.
- Maddie Manes and Hunt tacked on a pair of runs in the second to stretch the lead to 10-0. The Leopards got on the board in the third frame with Feliciano's single to right scoring Miller. A sacrifice fly from Igawa and a single from Delia tacked on two runs to cut the lead to 10-3.
- Feliciano hit a dart to right to bring in Miller and Igawa reached on an error to score another run as Wentworth made it a 10-6 game. Trostel's double scored Igawa to cut the deficit down to three.
- Brandeis added three runs in the top of the sixth with Wallace and Cae Pelligrini picking up RBIs. The Judges led 13-7 heading into the bottom of the inning. Igawa's RBI single scored Bolduc but the game went to the seventh with Wentworth trailing by five.
- Kaylee Habib's RBI groundout scored Delia to make it 13-9, but the Leopards could not complete the comeback and fell in game two.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 7th & 8th all-time meeting between the teams.
