Softball Secures Split with Gordon
Leopards respond to 7-2 setback in game one with a 9-1 thumping in game two as Kelsey Medalia goes 4-for-4 at the plate and Sydney Miccile picks up two RBI
BOSTON, Mass. – In Conference of New England action Tuesday afternoon, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team sailed past the Gordon Fighting Scots in game two of their conference twinbill by a 9-1 score after suffering a 7-2 setback in game one.
With the split, the Black & Gold raise their overall record to 18-20 and 7-9 in CNE play. The Scots hold an overall mark of 11-25 (3-13 CNE).
GAME ONE: GORDON 7, WENTWORTH 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Gordon took an initial 1-0 lead in the first on a ground out, the Black & Gold knotted the score at one aside on a sacrifice fly by Katie Kranz that plated Kelsey Medalia. In the third, Jess Rowe homered a solo shot that gave the Leopards a 2-1 edge.
- The Scots responded in the back half of the frame as a ground out with two runners in scoring position plated one, marking a 2-2 tie before an RBI single followed and gave Gordon a 3-2 lead.
- In the sixth, the Scots stretched their advantage to 7-2 as a two RBI doubles were followed by another RBI single, accounting for three of the four runs scored. In the seventh, Wentworth managed to threaten the score as singles by Medalia, Kyla Igawa and Julia Malowitz loaded the bags. However, Gordon retired the Leopards' final batter, ending the comeback bid.
- Igawa, Medalia, and Linnea Carlson each notched two hits to pace the offense. In the circle, Rowe surrendered six hits while striking out two in five innings of work. In relief, Malowitz fanned a batter and gave up five hits.
GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 9, GORDON 1 (FINAL – 6 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards got on the board in the first inning as Katelin Howe capitalized on an error. In the fourth, an RBI single by Lexi Lefkowski plated a run by Katie Kranz, marking a 2-0 game.
- Wentworth opened the game wide-open in the fifth as singles by Sydney Miccile and Abby Delia plated a score aside, extending the Leopards' lead to 4-0. A double by Kranz brought home a score by Miccile before a single by Brianna Miller plated another runner, marking a 6-0 score.
- After a single by Howe combined with an error brought in a pair of runs for the Leopards to stretch their lead to 8-0 later in the fifth, Gordon answered with an RBI single in the back half of the frame, plating one of their two runners on base to mark an 8-1 game. A fielder's choice in the sixth with two runners on brought one home for the Leopards in the sixth, raising the score to 9-1.
- Medalia was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Miller, who notched a pair of stolen bases, and Delia each added three hits apiece. In the circle, Julie Schriver struck out five batters and only surrendered one unearned run on six hits.
NOTEWORTHY:
- With her seventh win of the season, Schriver is now tied for the most wins in program history with 34.
SERIES NOTES:
- Wentworth has won seven of the last eight matchups between the two teams.
