Softball Falls in CCC Openers

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Sophomore Paige Moore-Haskell led a 24-hit attack with five singles over the doubleheader, to go with four runs batted in and three runs scored as the University of New England softball team swept Wentworth. The Nor'Easters took the first game, 8-4, and captured the second game, 9-0 (five innings).

With the wins UNE improves to 6-6 overall and opens its Commonwealth Coast Conference slate at 2-0. The Leopards fall to 0-8 (0-2).

Game one saw the Nor'Easters score three runs in the first inning thanks to a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single. Wentworth cut the lead to one with a pair of runs in the second on a two-run double off the bat of freshman Anna Hall (Franklin, Mass.).

The game remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fourth when the Nor'Easters took a 4-2 lead on a Moore-Haskell single. Wentworth used a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game as freshman Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) had an RBI single and sophomore Marina MacDonald Soccorso (Avon, Conn.) delivered a sacrifice fly.

UNE plated two runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good and would add two more in the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

Sara Pelkey took the win for UNE as she improved to 1-1 with a six-inning performance. Senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) was tagged with the loss (0-3).

Curran, Hall, and freshman Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) had two hits apiece for Wentworth/

Game two saw the Nor'Easters score all the runs they would need in the first inning, scoring three times on an RBI single and a two-run double. An inning later the hosts scored six times on six hits and were aided by a Leopard error.

Katelyn Austin (2-3) picked up the win for UNE while junior Anna Hall (South Portland, Maine) was tagged with the loss (0-3). Hall held the Nor'Easters scoreless over the final two innings. Freshman Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) had a pair of hits for the Leopards, who host Mass. Maritime on Thursday.
