#15 Men’s Volleyball Cruises Past Hobart
The Black & Gold win their fourth straight contest and their second straight sweep

BOSTON, Mass. – The #15 Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team cruised to a sweep of the Hobart Statesman on Friday night. Cody Popp led the way with six kills and five digs and one block. Connor Foxwell, Luke McQuaid, Krister Leya, and Matthew Zegowtiz each tallied three kills. William Biggs led the team with four blocks and added two kills and three digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wentworth opened the game on a 6-3 run with Nicolai Bell and Alem Dubcak tallying early kills and Hobart burning a timeout. Four service errors in a row made it a 9-5 game before an ace from Gabe Tucker and a finish from Foxwell made it 12-5, forcing Hobart into another timeout.
- The Leopards stayed in control out of the break, taking a 17-8 lead behind points from a kill from Dubcak and a pair of aces from Benjamin Moughon. Foxwell added another finish and an ace from Juan Zuniga stretched the lead to 20-9 for Wentworth. William Biggs secured the set with an ace, and the Leopards took a 1-0 lead in the match.
- The second set opened with the teams exchanging the first six points. Biggs and Cody Popp tallied points to give the Leopards an 8-4 lead. Wentworth extended the advantage to 12-6 and Hobart used a timeout to stop the run.
- The Statesman could not stop the Leopards' offense as the lead grew to 20-12 late in the frame. Hobart found life and rattled off four straight points to force a Wentworth timeout. The visitors continued to rally out of the break, cutting the lead to 21-18 with momentum on their side. Two late service errors gave Wentworth the 25-20 win and a 2-0 advantage in the match.
- Biggs had a block and a kill early in set three to help give the Leopards a 6-2 edge. Matthew Zegowtiz entered the game and tallied a kill and block to keep Hobart down by four. McQuaid's kill made it 12-7 before Hobart battled back to cut make a two-point game. Krister Leya and McQuaid scored back-to-back and an attack error pushed the Leopards' lead back to five points.
- Popp and Zegowitz combined for three strong finishes as Wentworth looked to end the game in three sets with the lead at 19-11. Nicholas Humphries and Nate Magni tallied kills for Hobart as the visitors made it a 23-18 game late. Wentworth held on to win 25-18 with Temmy Argynbay's ace securing the sweep.
THE SERIES
- Tonight was the third all-time meeting between the teams. Wentworth is 3-0 against Hobart.
