Men's Tennis Falls at Western New England
Golden Bears take an 8-1 win over the Leopards; Nate Schwartz and Matthew Smith team at number one doubles for Wentworth's lone point
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Peter LeFrancois was a double winner to help Western New England to an 8-1 victory over visiting Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's tennis action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts on Tuesday.
The Golden Bears have won three in a row to rise above .500 for the first time this season at 5-4, including a 2-0 mark in the CCC. The Leopards fall below the break-even mark at 2-3 overall and are 1-2 in the conference.
Junior PJ Nassar teamed up with LeFrancois to pick up a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles versus Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and Gaurav Tilva (Windsor, Conn.), helping the Golden Bears take a 2-1 advantage going into the singles competition.
LeFrancois also earned a 6-0, 6-1 No. 3 singles victory over Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) to pick up his second point of the afternoon.
Sophomore Andres Otero earned a win at No. 1 singles against Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.). Otero dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to take the second 6-1 and then the pro-set tiebreaker at 10-8.
Freshman Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Pa.) teamed with Smith to pick up the Leopards' lone point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
Wentworth hosts Endicott on Saturday at Harvard University.
