BIDDEFORD, Maine. – Michael Liquori's goal with 10:35 left in the first half snapped a 1-all tie and the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to just a pair of second-half shots as the Leopards edged the Nor'Easters, 2-1, in Conference of New England play on Tuesday night.
With the win, Wentworth improves to 4-9-4 overall and 3-5-0 in CNE play while UNE falls to 2-10-3 (0-7-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The teams traded shots early on, with each team putting their attempt wide of the mark. However, at the 12:35 mark, Wentworth got on the board off a goal from Carlos Jimenez, his first marker of the season.
- Nearly two and a half minutes later, the hosts tied the game at 1-all when Matthew Dewhurst set up Max Kierstead for a shot to the lower right of the net.
- The Nor'Easters pressured Wentworth's defense, putting three shots on net, all of which were saved by Isaac Chambass.
- Liquori picked up his second goal of the season at the 34:25 mark when Vinny Dentrone and Angel Rojas set him up for a shot that found the lower center. Dentrone's assist came 39 seconds after he had entered the contest.
- UNE had a pair of shots late in the first half, including one that Chambass saved to keep the Black & Gold on top.
- While Wentworth's defense held the hosts to just a pair of shots over the final 45:00, only one of those was on target, which was saved by Mason Brooks in the 65th minute.
- Chambass had four saves in the first half to earn the win, while Brooks made one save. Shots were even at 9-9 and corner kicks were 2-2.
