BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Jacob Brigandi (Vernon, Conn.) tallied a goal and an assist while freshman keeper Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) made two saves to record his fourth shutout of the season as the Salve Regina men's soccer team defeated Wentworth, 2-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Sweeney Field.
Brigandi gave the Seahawks the only goal they would need in the 15th minute of play when his free kick was headed toward the goal and glanced off a Leopard defender into the net.
At the 31:43 mark Brigandi sent a pass to freshman Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.), who found the back of the net and gave Salve Regina a 2-0 lead.
Despite no scoring in the second half, both teams created scoring chances but were unable to find the back of the net.
Stern made one save in each half to improve to 8-4-0 on the season. Wentworth junior Cody Gibb (Foster, R.I.) made four saves over the first 73 minutes before giving way to senior John Longo (Needham, Mass.), who made a pair of stops in 17 minutes of action. The Leopards had a 16-13 shot advantage, however Salve Regina put eight shots on net as opposed to the Leopards' two. Wentworth also had a 5-2 corner kick advantage.
With the win Salve Regina snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 10-4-1 overall and 5-2-0 in league play. Wentworth dropped its second straight contest to fall to 1-9-2 (1-4-1). Both teams step out of conference play on Monday as the Seahawks host Suffolk and the Leopards are at WPI.
