EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Richie Harvey's (Standish, Maine) with 20:00 left in regulation tied the game at 1-all as Wentworth and Johnson & Wales played to a 1-all stalemate in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field Thursday afternoon.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with Johnson & Wales holding a 6-2 advantage in shots, including a header from JWU senior Patrick Nally (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) that hit the cross bar.
Johnson & Wales got on the board early in the second half when they controlled the opening kick. With just 38 seconds gone from the clock, sophomore Kyle Metz (St. James, N.Y.) put in a shot into the upper left corner of the net from 15 yards out after passes from fellow sophomore Dustin Hughes (Holden, Mass.) and freshman Drew Lightfoot (Philadelphia, Pa.). Wentworth knotted the game at the 69:59 mark when Harvey blasted in a shot from 30 yards out to make the score 1-1.
Both teams had their chances down the stretch, but neither could capitalize as regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
Freshman Jon Robbins (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) had four stops for Johnson & Wales while junior Cody Gibb (Foster, R.I.) made eight saves for Wentworth.
With the tie Johnson & Wales is now 1-0-1 while Wentworth is 0-2-1 for the season. The Leopards face MIT in their home opener on Saturday at Noon, while that same day the Wildcats travel to St. Joseph's of Maine for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest, starting at 1:00 p.m.
