Men's Soccer Shut Out by Gordon, 7-0
Leopards surrender most goals since start of 1995 season as Fighting Scots score three times in first 16 minutes
WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team dipped below .500 (4-5) as the Leopards were shut out by Gordon, 7-0, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Gordon. The seven goals surrendered by the Leopards were the most since giving up nine in a 9-0 loss at UMass Dartmouth on Sept. 8, 1995.
The Fighting Scots wasted little time getting on the board when senior Joe Spruance (Ledyard, Conn.) scored from classmate Matt Horth (Akron, Ohio) and freshman Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) just 1:26 into the contest. Spruance added his second of the game at 9:15 with a goal assisted by sophomore Eric Ernst (Ridgecrest, Calif.) and junior John Clancy (Woodridge, Ill.). Vandervoot made it a 3-0 game with an unassisted marker at 15:43. The final 29:17 of the half would see no scoring, giving the Fighting Scots a three-goal advantage at the break.
Gordon tacked on four goals in the second half, beginning with a goal from freshman Brandon Vanderveen (Wheaton, Ill.) at 48:35. Less than two minutes later the Fighting Scots increased the lead to 5-0 when Spruance completed the hat trick with a goal assisted set up by a corner kick from sophomore Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) at 50:17. Kasiguran scored from Vanderveen at 76:24 before freshman Chase Beech (Scarborough, Maine) closed out the scoring with a goal from classmate Christian Vega (Miami, Fla.) at 84:33.
Sophomore Alex Sosler (Willoughby, Ohio) in recording his second shutout of the season for Gordon. Senior Brian Pearsall (Sanford, Maine) made three saves and allowed three goals in the first half while sophomore John Longo (Needham, Mass.) made three saves and allowed four goals over the final 45:00. The Fighting Scots outshot the Leopards, 28-10.
With the win, Gordon runs its unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1) and improves to 4-3-2 overall and 2-0-2 in TCCC play. The Fighting Scots are at Curry on Saturday. In addition to falling to 4-5 overall, the Leopards stand at 2-3 in the conference and are at Regis on Saturday.
