Men’s Lacrosse Downs Nichols on Senior Day
The Leopards hold off the Bison for an important CNE win on senior day
BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team took down the Nichols Bison 15-12 on Saturday night on senior day. The Leopards improve to 8-6 this season and 4-4 in conference play. Tyler Longo and Brendan Kroll each tallied three goals and two assists. Gabe Cobham and Jake Caraluzzi both scored three goals. Anthony Ballestrini added a goal and an assist while Tony Corrado and Richard Roy also scored one goal each. AJ Smith made nine saves to improve to 8-6 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bison took the lead to open the game behind Tyler Olivo's goal. Caraluzzi and Ballestrini scored back-to-back goals in a minute to put Wentworth in front 2-1. Nichols then tied the game with a goal from Jack Campbell.
- Kroll and Campbell exchanged goals as the game stayed tied 3-3. Cobham's tally put Wentworth in front before three goals from the Bison gave the visitors a 6-4 lead. Longo's tally in the final minute made it a 6-5 game after one quarter.
- Kroll tied the game 6-6 with an early tally in the second quarter. Both sides battled but neither could find the back of the net as the game stayed deadlocked with just under eight minutes to play in the half.
- Shea Ullo gave the Bison the lead before Longo's man-down tally tied things again. Cobham scored a man-up goal with 3:22 to play to give Wentworth the lead which they took into the halftime break. The Leopards went 13 for 16 on clears while Nichols had a 12-5 edge in faceoffs.
- Caraluzzi and Corrado scored in the first four minutes to the second half to push Wentworth's lead to 10-7. Caraluzzi added another tally just under five minutes later to make it an 11-7 game.
- The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle with the score still 11-7. Jonah Libby scored to make it 11-8 before Longo scored a big goal to give the Leopards a four-goal edge once again. John Caserta's goal got the Bison back within three with 11:22 to play.
- Roy pushed the lead back to four goals before a man-up goal from Kroll gave Wentworth a 14-9 lead. Campbell got another one back for the Bison before Cobham's tally with under five minutes remaining gave Wentworth a 15-10 lead.
- Wentworth held off a late surge from the Bison to keep their five-goal lead heading into the final five minutes of the game. John Caserta scored an unassisted tally and Conor Doherty scored a man-up goal in the final seconds to make it a 15-12 final.

- Today was the 30th all-time meeting between the teams.
