Roger Williams Outlasts Men’s Lacrosse
The Leopards came back to tie the game but ultimately fell to the Hawks in a back-and-forth CNE contest
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell in a tightly contested Conference of New England matchup against Roger Williams on Tuesday night. Tony Corrado and Tyler Longo both scored two goals while Brendan Kroll added a goal and an assist. Keegan Buffa had eight ground balls and went 16-23 at the x. Six other Leopards found the back of the net in a balanced effort from Wentworth.
AJ Smith made nine saves in the cage. Kyle Leger had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Corrado opened the scoring less than a minute into the game to fire the Leopards in front. Caleb McKeown tied the game two minutes later before the Hawks rattled off three goals in 90 seconds to take a 4-1 lead.
- McKeown and Carter Shelton added to the hosts' lead with goals in the final five minutes of the quarter to lead 6-1 after one.
- Colin Blackburn made it 6-2 just 12 seconds into the second quarter as the Leopards got the start they were looking for. Reece Moore scored less than a minute later to restore the Hawks' five-goal cushion.
- The sides went scoreless for nearly seven minutes before Corrado fired in his second of the game to make to 7-3. Bryce Kubas and Gabe Cobham scored a pair of goals in 49 seconds to bring the Leopards within two. Wentworth tied the game up less than a minute later as Gavin Lawrence and Richard Roy found the back of the net. The teams went into the halftime break tied at 7-all.
- Shelton scored an early tally in the third to put the Hawks back in front. The Leopards' offense fired off seven shots over the next few minutes but could find the tying goal. McKeown gave Roger Williams a 9-7 lead with 6:42 to play in the third. Shelton scored again less than a minute later to give the hosts breathing room with a 10-7 lead.
- Jake Caraluzzi got one back for the Leopards 40 seconds into the fourth quarter before Longo's tally made it a 10-9 game. The tying goal came 48 seconds later as Kroll fired in his first goal of the game with an assist from Chuck Urda.
- Connor Russel put the Hawks back in front with 7:24 remaining. The Leopards had a few shots but could not find an equalizer and took a timeout with 1:33 to play. Caraluzzi had a shot saved and Roger Williams ran out the clock to take the 12-11 win in a tightly contested conference game.
THE SERIES
- Tonight was the 41st all-time meeting between the teams.
