Men's Lacrosse Falls at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – Four different players tallied three points on two goals and one assist and a 10-0 run in the first half broke open a tie game as the Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 19-8, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Hawks capture their eighth straight victory and improve to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 7-5 (3-3).

Roger Williams scored three times in the first 2:32 of the contest as senior Mike Hanna (Somers, Conn.), junior Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.), and junior Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) all scored. Wentworth responded with three straight of its own when freshman Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.), senior Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.), and junior Nick Parent (Windham, Mass.) tied the game with 5:31 left in the quarter.

The Hawks scored three times to close out the first quarter and would begin a 10-0 run over the next 20:02 to pull ahead for good. Senior Patrick Holland (Wilton, Conn.), sophomore AJ Core (Syosett, N.Y.), and sophomore Max Cammarota (Redding, Conn.) scored in the first quarter and seven different players – including Hannah and Kelly – would tally in the second to make it a 13-3 game at the half.

Wentworth snapped its scoreless streak on a man-up goal from senior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) 1:28 into the third quarter and got a man-up marker off the stick of Cushera less than two minutes later. Junior Parker Leese (Duxbury, Mass.) and Coakley traded goals before the Hawks would hold the Leopards scoreless over the next 16:08 to take a 19-7 lead. Coakley scored with 1:18 left to end the drought and round out the scoring.

Hanna, Kelly, junior Doug Brown (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.), and Gagnon all had two goals and an assist while Cammarota had two goals. Junior Dan Arket (Poughquag, N.Y.) won 22-of-24 at the X and scooped up 12 ground balls.

Coakley finished with three goals and an assist while Cushera had two goals. Five different players led the Black & Gold with four ground balls each.

Senior Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) made 14 saves in 45 minutes to pick up the win before giving way to senior Alex Peebles (Guilderland, N.Y.), who made five saves in the fourth quarter. Freshman Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) made eight saves for Wentworth. Roger Williams had a 46-35 shot advantage and a 56-40 edge in ground balls.

Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Tuesday night. That same day, Roger Williams is at Western New England.
