EVERETT, Mass. – Scoring six unanswered goals in a span of 22:18, the University of New England ice hockey team doubled up Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, in Conference of New England action Saturday afternoon.
With the win the seventh-ranked Nor'Easters improve to 19-5-0 overall and 15-3-0 in CNE play while the Leopards slip to 5-16-2 (4-13-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth used a three-goal first period – all coming in a span of 3:15 – to take a 3-0 lead. Cole Paredes and Shea Thibeault worked the puck around to Nikolas Sombrowski, who had a shot blocked and eventually found the back of the net at 7:30. Just 31 seconds later, Ian Worthley played the puck out from behind the net to Nick Cullinan. Cullinan fed Demond Johnson who tucked the puck inside the near post from the faceoff circle. At 10:45, a nifty three-on-one saw Jake Hines and Nicholas Ramm feed Nolan Pecora to push the lead to 3-0.
- The second period was back and forth with both teams sporting chances. However, it was UNE that had the lone goal of the period as Cam Bergeman scored at 16:44, just after a Nor'Easter power play expired to make it 3-1.
- Just 14 seconds into the third period, Nathan Chickering started UNE's five-goal period, which was followed by a power-play goal by Dominic Murphy at 2:25, tying the game at 2-all. Fernand-Olivier Perron scored twice in a span of 23 seconds (9:00 and 9:23) to give UNE a 5-3 lead.
- With 2:22 left, Topher Chirico was pulled for an extra attacker. The Leopards had a pair of shot attempts, including one put on net by Johnson. However, with 52 seconds left, Chickering sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
- Chirico made 33 saves.
