FITCHBURG, Mass. – Three third period goals broke open a tight contest as the Fitchburg State hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-0, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
With the win the Falcons improve to 5-4-0 overall while the Leopards fall to 2-6-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth opened the game outshooting Fitchburg State by a 9-2 margin, however, it was the Falcons who got on the board first. Alexandre Bauvis and Nicklas Millhorn set up Nael Touhami to put the hosts on top at the 11:09 mark. That was the only goal of the period as Wentworth had a 14-9 shot advantage.
- A back-and-forth second period saw both teams with scoring chances, however, neither squad could find the back of the net. Wentworth had a narrow, 11-10 advantage in shots on goal in the second period.
- Seventeen seconds into the third period the Leopards were called for a penalty, putting the hosts on the power play. At the 1:00 mark, Fitchburg State upped its lead to 2-0 when Christian Halbig scored from Aleksei Filimonov and Devin Niles. Jeremy Mallet put home his own rebound at the 11:37 mark to put the Falcons on top, 3-0. A power-play goal by Tye Battipaglia at 12:57 gave the hosts a 4-0 lead.
- Topher Chirico made 28 saves. Wentworth had a 33-32 shot advantage.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the 32nd all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads, 17-11-4.
