EVERETT, Mass. – George Kolovos scored a pair of goals and Jack McGovern notched his first collegiate shutout as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team blanked Roger Williams, 3-0, in a Conference of New England contest Friday night.
With the win the Leopards improve to 2-4-1 overall and 2-3 in CNE play while the Hawks fall to 1-5-0 (0-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth successfully killed off three Roger Williams power-play attempts, including having to kill off a major penalty early in the contest. McGovern made a pair of saves late in the period to keep the game scoreless.
- The Leopards caught a break near the midpoint of the second period after turning the puck over in its own zone. Colin Kwak gained possession of the puck off the turnover and nearly beat McGovern, however, his shot hit the post. Late in the period, with a faceoff in the Wentworth zone, the Hawks pulled netminder Jacob Jaslow for an extra attacker and were able to get a shot attempt off, however, Nick Bosch blocked the attempt just as time expired.
- At the 4:34 mark of the third period, the Black & Gold got all the scoring they needed when Kolovos notched his second goal of the season. Nikolas Sombrowski fed a pass to Kolovos who sent the puck to Nolan Lowe. Lowe gave the puck back to Kolovos outside of the right faceoff circle where he shot from just inside the circle and beat Jaslow.
- Wentworth continued to apply pressure and, with 3:15 left, a power-play goal from Kolovos put the hosts ahead, 2-0. Sombrowski send a pass back to Desmond Johnson, who pushed the puck up the ice to Kolovos for his second of the game and third of the season.
- Jaslow was pulled for an extra attacker and with 2:05 left, the Leopards were called for a penalty, making it a 6-on-4 situation. However, Hunter Wilson thwarted any plans Roger Williams had of getting back in the game when he stole a pass and sent a shot down the ice for the shorthanded, empty-net goal that made it 3-0.
- McGovern made 22 saves to earn the shutout. Wentworth had a 29-22 shot advantage and was 6-for-6 killing penalties on the night.
