SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Oscar Worob tallied a pair of goals to help the Skidmore College ice hockey team defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-2, in the season opener for both teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A back and forth opening to the game saw both teams with chances to get on the board first, however, Wentworth's Jack McGovern and Skidmore's Joshua Seeley went save-for-save to keep the game scoreless.
- The Leopards jumped on the board at the 12:08 mark as George Kolovos, Wentworth's leading scorer during his freshman season, kicked off his sophomore campaign with a goal that was set up by Alex Walicki and Jesse Chamberlain.
- Wentworth killed off a pair of penalties late in the period to hold the lead and had a pair of shots on goal near the end of the period that Seeley saved to keep it a 1-0 contest. McGovern made 15 saves in the opening frame.
- The Black & Gold held the lead until the Thoroughbreds scored three times in a span of 3:10 to take a 3-1 lead. Worob got things started with a power-play tally at 16:32, which tied the game at 1-all. Ryan Stratton gave the hosts a 2-1 lead exactly one minute later before Ryna Waltman scored with 18 seconds left in the period, making it 3-1.
- Worob's second of the night was also a power-play goal as he scored at 9:55 of the third period to make it 4-1. Kolovos and Ian Worthley set up Desmond Johnson, who cut the lead to 4-2 with 6:50 left but the hosts responded with a Shane Baker goal 58 seconds later, making it 5-2. Jacob Zwirecki added an empty-net goal at the 17:43 mark to round out the scoring.
- McGovern turned aside 46 shots on the night.
