UMass Boston Spoils Hockey's Home Opener

EVERETT, Mass. – Junior Nolan Redler (Winchester, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and senior John Regnart (Anchorage, Alaska) had a goal and two assists as the University of Massachusetts Boston ice hockey team opened its season with a 9-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Saturday night.

The Beacons put up three goals in the first period as freshmen Chris Peters (Rochester, N.Y.) and Zach Bross (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Jack Riley (Wrentham, Mass.) found the back of the net at 5:04, 9:49, and 17:24, respectively. UMass Boston had a 19-6 shot advantage through the first 20 minutes of play.

A power-play goal from senior Garrison Sanipass (Northbrook, Ill.) provided the only goal of the second period and gave the visitors a 4-0 lead before UMass Boston scored five times in the third period, including going 4-for-5 on a major power play. Redler scored both of his goals in the final stanza while senior Bryan Carter (Hudson, Mass.), junior Tyler Sifferien (North Andover, Mass.), and Regnart also scored in the period.

Junior Bailey MacBurnie (Beverly, Mass.) made 16 saves to pick up the shutout. Freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) made 31 saves in 52:31 of work while classmate Alexandre Toueg (Blainville, Que.) made one stop in his collegiate debut. UMass Boston had a 41-16 shot advantage and was 5-for-11 on the power play while also scoring a shorthanded goal.

Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play Friday night at Nichols.
