BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team overcame a 19-point deficit but fell just short on Monday's home opener against MIT. Colin Mannke scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Russel Dolabany and Mike Yentin each added 11 points while Davis Lunn scored eight and dished out three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers scored the game's first five points before Yentin's triple got the Leopards on the board. Yentin hit another three on the following possession to put the hosts in front early. The teams went back and forth before Merlin Gogolin's jumper put MIT in front at the midway mark of the first half.
- Isaac Dobie's three stretched the visitors lead to six and the Leopards answered with buckets from Dolabany and Mannke made it a one possession game. Dolabany made a tough and-one to tie things up with just under seven minutes to play. The Engineers kept their noses in front through to halftime with Gogolin's layup giving the visitors a 39-32 lead at the break.
- Gogolin was a force all night and his bucket a minute and a half into the second half pushed the lead to double digits. Isaac Dobie's steal and triple made it a 14-point advantage for the Engineers. Dylan Olson's jumper and Mannke's layup gave the Leopards a bit of life with just over six minutes to play, now trailing by fourteen.
- Olson came up big again with three minutes to go with a layup followed by a steal-and-score as Wentworth cut the lead down to nine. Mannke came up with a big offensive rebound and seconds later knocked down a big three, making it a six-point game. With just under two minutes left, Mannke nailed another three, cutting the MIT advantage down to four.
- Wentworth's pressure continued to pay off as Dolabany's layup made it a one possession game. A pair of free throws from Sean Racette tied things up 31 seconds left. After an MIT timeout, the Engineers got a late bucket from Dobie, sinking the Leopards' comeback and gave the visitors the win.
