BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team dropped a 74-62 decision to the UMass Boston Beacons on Friday evening inside the Clark Athletic Center Gym.
The Beacons used an opening eight points from junior Alex Sanchez (Salem, Mass.) to build a 15-3 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Junior Kyle Henseler (Coventry, R.I.) broke the drought for Wentworth with a layup at the 12-minute mark, and sunk a trey with 7:52 left in the half, igniting a 10-4 lead to cut the deficit 29-20. Henseler scored a team-leading nine points in the first half, while Sanchez and freshman Javaris Hill (Lynn, Mass.) each bucketed 12 points each, giving UMass Boston a 39-28 lead heading into the break.
UMass Boston shot 58.3% in the second frame and never surrendered the lead, despite 18 points from junior Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.).
Azums scored 22 points in the effort, including 9-of-13 shooting from the floor while pulling down a team-best four rebounds. Henseler followed with 15 points, with nine coming from behind the arc, and also dished out five assists.
Wentworth (2-7) returns to action on Saturday, December 29th when they travel to the Clark Basketball Holiday Classic. The Leopards tip-off with Worcester State at 1:00 p.m.
