Baseball Sweeps Curry in Saturday Doubleheader
The Black & Gold pick up two big wins in CNE play with a sweep of the Curry Colonels
WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team won both games in the Saturday doubleheader against Curry College. The Leopards won game one 4-2 before securing the sweep with an 8-3 win in game two.
Caleb Cormier went 1-3 with two runs and one RBI while Lukas Poirier and Mike Sibert each tallied one RBI and one hit. Nick Cullinan went 1-3 with one run and Christian Roncal went 1-4 with one run. Nigel Cross improved to 2-4 this season after 7.0 innings with six strikeouts. Alec Peruzzi threw 2.0 frames with two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. Cyle Archer had three stolen bases and drew two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Leopards took the lead in the second inning after Poirier doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Cormier came in to score from an error by the Colonels to put Wentworth in front 1-0.
- Cross pitched well through the first four frames, striking out five hitters with just one hit allowed. Cullinan hit a single up the middle before Roncal's double to right center put two runners on again for the Leopards.
- Cormier hit an RBI single to bring in Cullinan before Roncal scored on Poirier's groundout. Sibert followed with a single up the middle to bring in Cormier and the Leopards pushed the lead to 4-0.
- Cross kept the Colonels off the board after throwing scoreless fifth and sixth innings. Curry cut into the lead in the seventh inning, scoring two runs to make it a 4-2 game heading into the eighth inning.
- Peruzzi entered the game for the eighth inning and threw a scoreless frame to keep Wentworth in front. The Leopards could not add to their advantage, taking a 4-2 lead into the ninth. Peruzzi recorded one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win for the Leopards, earning his first save of the season.
Cyle Archer went 2-4 with four RBI while Roncal went 2-3 with three RBI and one run. Poirier went 2-4 with two runs and one RBI and Cullinan scored two runs with one hit. Tommy Crowley gets his first win of the season to improve to 1-2 this season after 4.0 innings with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Colonels took the lead in the first inning as Blake Fuller scored on a fielding error. Wentworth struggled at the plate until the fourth when they took a 2-1 lead after Roncal's single to center field scored Cullinan and Robinson. Curry tied the game in the top of the sixth.
- Roncal came up big again with an RBI single to center field to give the Leopards a 3-2 lead. Poirier followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2 before Archer's single to right field brought in Poirier and Roncal to push the lead to 6-2.
- Curry tacked on a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to three, but the Leopards responded in the bottom half of the inning. Archer brought in a pair of runs with a single up the middle to give Wentworth an 8-3 advantage.
- The Leopards pick up two important wins in conference play as the postseason draws closer.
THE SERIES
- Today was the 72nd and 73rd all-time meeting between the teams.
