WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Mike Sibert and Lukas Poirier each recorded three hits and drove in two runs and Alec Peruzzi improved to 4-0 on the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team ran its win streak to six with a 12-2 win over Gordon in the Conference of New England opener for both squads.
With the win the Leopards improve to 11-6 while the Fighting Scots fall to 4-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Playing as the visiting team, Wentworth had a chance to score in the top of the first as Sibert led off with a walk, with one out stole second, and went to third on a Nick Cullinan ground out. However, he was stranded there when a line out ended the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Gordon loaded the bases with one out but Peruzzi got a strikeout and a ground out to keep the Fighting Scots off the board.
- Matthew Favazzo hit a one-out single to open the second inning, however, he was erased when Jake Samela singled and Favazzo was thrown out trying to go to third. With Samela on second, Alex Dayton walked, which was followed by a Caleb Cormier infield single. On the throw to first, an errant throw allowed Samela to score, giving the Black & Gold a 1-0 lead.
- The Fighting Scots tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as a leadoff single eventually led to an RBI infield single.
- Using a six-run fifth inning, Wentworth took the lead for good. Sibert and Poirier started the inning each with singles and both stole bases. On Sibert's steal, an errant throw allowed him to score to make it 2-1. With two outs, Josh Turcotte doubled to bring in Poirier and Dayton had a two-run single that scored Turcotte and Favazzo. In his second at bat of the frame, Sibert had a two-run double that plated Samela and Dayton.
- With two outs in the seventh, Cormier reached on an error and went to second on a Sibert single. Poirier drove them both in with a triple, making it 9-1. The home half of the inning saw Gordon score a run to cut the lead to 9-2.
- The Leopards rounded out the scoring in the ninth inning, scoring three times. Cormier led off being hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. Sibert walked before Poirier singled to load the bases. Cullinan had an RBI groundout that scored Cormier, Matt Robinson scored Sibert on a sacrifice fly, and Turcotte drove in Poirier with a single.
- Peruzzi pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out seven. Tommy Crowley and Nigel Cross pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with Cross setting down the side in order.
- In addition to his three hits, Sibert walked twice and stole a pair of bases. Turcotte and Dayton each had two hits and drove in two runs.
