BOSTON, Mass. – Using a five-run sixth inning, the Colby-Sawyer baseball team snapped a 5-all tie and defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 12-7, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
With the win the Chargers improve to 1-4 on the season while the Leopards fall to 4-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first two innings of play, Colby-Sawyer got a leadoff double in the third and the runner went to third on a ground out. A ground ball in the field allowed the runner to score on an error, putting the Chargers ahead, 1-0. An RBI double made it 2-0, and two runs came home to score on an error.
- Wentworth tied the game in the bottom of the third. Christian Roncal led off with a double and went to third on an Andrew Pantano single. With one out, Pantano got into scoring position when he went to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Nick Cullinan reached on an error which scored Roncal and Pantano and Josh Turcotte hit a two-run double to even the score.
- The teams traded runs in the fifth as Colby-Sawyer made it 5-5 on an RBI double, while, in the bottom of the inning, Matthew Favazzo was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a Turcotte RBI double.
- Colby-Sawyer loaded the lases with one out in the top of the sixth and drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-5. The next batter, Jacob Putnam, followed with a towering grand slam to left to make it 10-5.
- Wentworth chipped away in the bottom of the sixth as Christian Figueroa led off with a single and went to second on a Roncal walk. With two outs, Matt Robinson walked to load the bases and Cullinan followed with a two-run double to score Figueroa and Roncal and make it 10-7.
- The Chargers got a pair of runs in the seventh, thanks in part to an error and a passed ball, to round out the scoring.
- Tommy Crowley took the loss (0-2), allowing nine runs (six earned) on six hits, and struck out three in 5.1 innings. Chase Carder, Jace Rogers, and Joseph Sinibaldi all saw action on the mound. Sinibaldi pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair.
- At the plate, Turcotte was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Cullinan was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Roncal reached base four times, including going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
