Baseball Goes on the Offensive in Sweep of Trine
Leopards score 26 runs on 28 hits in a 13-11, 13-3 sweep of the Thunder

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball scored 26 runs and pounded out 28 hits as the Leopards swept Trine on Monday. Wentworth won the first game, 13-11, and picked up the win in the nightcap by a 13-3 score.
With the wins the Leopards improve to 2-2 on the season while the Thunder fall to 2-7.
GAME ONE: Wentworth 13, Trine 11
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth took 3-0 lead in the first inning as Christian Roncal walked and went to second before a Matt Robinson single moved him to second. Nick Cullinan followed with an RBI single to plate Roncal and a walk by Matthew Favazzo loaded the bases. Josh Turcotte put the Black & Gold ahead, 2-0, when his sacrifice fly scored Robinson and with the bases loaded, Andrew Pantano grounded out to score Cullinan.
- Chatham scored four runs in the record, with two coming on an RBI double and added a run on a wild pitch in the third to make it 5-3. A two-run single in the fourth put the Cougars on top, 7-3.
- Scoring five in the fourth, Wentworth regained the lead, thanks to RBI singles from Mike Sibert, Matthew Favazzo and Turcotte. An error and a wild pitch accounted for the other two runs. The Black & Gold added five more runs in the fifth to take a 13-7 lead as Favazzo had a two-run single, Lukas Poirier and Pantano each had RBI singles, and Porier scored on a squeeze bunt from Alex Dayton.
- Scoring three in the sixth, Trine crept back into the game, cutting the lead to 13-10. In the seventh, the Thunder score on an RBI single to make it 13-11 and with he bases loaded, Bennett Leary induced a ground out to end the contest.
- Chase Carder picked up the win in relief (1-0), allowing no runs on no hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work. Leary picked up his first save, allowing a run on a pair of hits in the seventh. Offensively, Turcotte had three hits and two RBI while Robinson, Cullinan, Favazzo, and Poirier each had two hits. Favazzo and Pantano drove in three and two runs, respectively.
GAME TWO: Wentworth 13, Trine 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Thunder took advantage of a Wentworth error in the first inning and took a 1-0 lead. However, the lead didn't last long as the Leopards scored three times in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Jake Samela and Poirier drew back-to-back walks to open the second inning and, with one out, Sibert laced a single that scored Samela. After Sibert and Poirier executed a double steal, Poirier scored on a wild pitch that moved Sibert to third. Roncal followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Sibert.
- Over the next two innings, Trine tied the game, using an RBI double in the second to make it 3-2 and an RBI single in the third to tie the contest.
- The Leopards broke the tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Roncal singled, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. Robinson followed with a single to score Roncal and make it 3-2. Robinson stole second and with two outs, Favazzo singled him home.
- Wentworth added three more in the fifth to lead, 8-3. With one out, Pantano was hit by a pitch. Sibert followed with a single and a miscue on the play put runners on second and third. Roncal cleared the bases with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.
- The Black & Gold broke open the game in the sixth with a five-run inning, thanks in part to a pair of errors and a passed ball. Pantano, Sibert, Robinson, Cullinan, each drove in runs in the inning.
- Alec Peruzzi picked up the win (1-0), allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out six in four innings. Jace Rogers, Aaron Masson, and Jack Titley combined for three shutout innings allowing just one hit. Masson struck out two.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the first two meetings between the two teams.
