DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team opened its season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Chatham. The Leopards fell, 6-1, in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Chatham 6, Wentworth 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a one-out single, the runner was caught stealing and Connor Whitehead got a groundout to set Chatham down. However, and inning late, the Cougars scored all of their runs, which included three straight doubles. A pair of Wentworth errors, an RBI triple, and a passed ball accounted for all six runs.
- The Leopards plated a run in the third, cutting the lead to 6-1. Christian Figueroa reached on a third strike wild pitch and, with two outs, Lukas Poirier recorded his first collegiate hit, which moved Figueora to third Josh Turcotte followed with a single to bring in Figueora.
- Alex Dayton drew a one-out walk in the fifth and stole second, however, was left in scoring position.
- Poirier and Turcotte had Wentworth's hits, with Turcotte driving in a run.
- Whitehead took the loss (0-1), allowing six runs (three earned) and six hits in two innings. Freshmen Jace Rogers, Tommy Crowley, Aaron Masson, and Joseph Sinibaldi allowed just one hit over five shutout innings, while striking out seven Cougars. Masson had three of the seven strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Chatham 4, Wentworth 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With one out in the first inning, Matthew Favazzo singled and went to second after a two-out single from Jake Samela. However, both runners were stranded there after a groundout ended the inning.
- Chatham scored three times in the bottom of the first inning, using a pair of sacrifice flies and scoring on an error after a stolen base. Nigel Cross got a strikeout to end the inning with a runner in scoring position.
- Poirier led off the second inning with a single, however, three outs left him on base. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars used another sacrifice fly to take a 4-1 lead. With runners on first and second and one out, a double play ended the inning.
- Turcotte led off the fourth inning with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, her scored on a passed ball, making it 4-1.
- Cross pitched a complete game (0-1), allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and recording two strikeouts. Seven Leopards recorded a hit in the contest.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the third and fourth all-time meetings between the two teams
