Baseball Sails Past Mass. Maritime
Leopards get two hits apiece from six student-athletes and Cooper Smith notches his first collegiate win in a 12-3 triumph over the Buccaneers

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Six student-athletes recorded two hits apiece while Cooper Smith picked up his first collegiate win as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team defeated Mass. Maritime, 12-3, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards improve to 7-15 on the season while the Buccaneers fall to 13-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth plated a pair in the top of the first inning. Lapierre singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Matthew Favazzo single. After Favazzo stole second and went to third on a passed ball, he came into score on an RBI double from A.T. DiPina. Mass. Maritime evened the score in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Brett Velzis and Bill Gorry.
- Scoring five times in the top of the second, the Leopards took a 7-2 lead. John Golebieski and Jake Prisco led off with back-to-back walks and a double steal put runners at second and third. A single by Mike Sibert scored Golebieski and Lapierre was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Robinson delivered a two-run double and Matthew Favazzo followed with an RBI ground out. With two outs, Nick Cullinan singled in Robinson.
- Wentworth added a run in the fourth inning to make it 8-2. Robinson led off with a walk and with one out went to second after a DiPina single. Cullinan reached on a fielder's choice where DiPina was safe at second on an error. Christian Roncal followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and an error allowed Robinson to score.
- The Buccaneers cut the lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI single from Grady Freeman. Two innings later, a Jake Samela sacrifice fly scored Jake Prisco, who had led off with a single and went to third after Sibert singled, making it 9-3.
- In the ninth inning, the Black & Gold scored three times to make it 12-3. Bennett Leary had a pinch-hit RBI double that scored Favazzo, Roncal singled in Leary, and, with the bases loaded, Roncal scored on a wild pitch.
- Robinson and Favazzo each had two hits and two RBI. Lapierre had a pair of hits and stole three bases, giving him eight thefts over the last three games. DiPina, Cullinan, and Sibert also had two hits apiece.
- Smith (1-0) pitched the first two innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out two. Jack Titley, Michael Archambault, and Chase Carder combined to throw six scoreless innings and strike oute seven batters, with Archambault fanning five.
ALL-TIME SERIES:
- Today was the 37th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth has won the last two meetings.
