Leopard Mixed Smallbore Shooters Capture MAC Title
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Competing in the Expert Division of the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference, the Wentworth mixed rifle team took part in the annual MAC Championships held today at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The mixed smallbore team claimed Wentworth's sixth MAC Smallbore Championship (and 12th MAC Championship overall) with a 2189-2131 win over MIT, while the mixed air rifle team fell just short in its bid for a second straight championship with a 2222-2189 loss to John Jay.
Avenging a 2149-2143 loss to the Engineers back in October, Wentworth was led by freshman Alex Zadrozny (Pembroke, Mass.), who shot a 561. Senior Brian Appel (Holyoke, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Vollinger (Hatfield, Mass.) shot 548 and 542, respectively, while senior Kirstin Torento (Higganum, Conn.) rounded out the top four scorers with a 538.
The Leopards, who lost to John Jay by a 2183-2171 margin during the regular season were narrowly defeated by the Bloodhounds in the championship match. Torento closed out her career in style, posting a high score of 549, which was also matched by Vollinger. Torento was awarded the top score based on the final target shot as a tie breaker. Junior Pete L'Heureux (Wallingford, Conn.) finished right behind the leaders with a 548, while Zadrozny and senior Andy Puhlick (Willington, Conn.) each shot a 543. Zadrozny's was the fourth Leopard score counted, based on the last target shot tiebreaker.
