Wentworth Shooters Finish Regular Season
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Wentworth's rifle teams finished the 2010-2011 regular season with a match at the US Coast Guard Academy vs the host Bears any the SUNY-Maritime air rifle quad. The mixed smallbore team came away victorious, defeating Coast Guard, 2163-2114, while in air rifle the mixed team was edged by the Bears, 2194-2191, but finished ahead of SUNY-Maritime (2059) and the Leopard women's air rifle squad (1982).
Freshman Alex Zadrozny (Pembroke, Mass.) fired a team-high 550 in mixed smallbore to pace the Leopards, which was closely followed by junior Pete L'Heueux's (Wallingford, Conn.) 547. Senior Brian Appel (Holyoke, Mass.) shot a 534, while classmate Kirsten Torento (Higganum, Conn.) rounded out Wentworth's scorers with a 532.
In mixed air rifle, sophomore Mark Vollinger (Hatfield, Mass.) led the Leopards with a 556, which would edge L'Heureux's 555. Zadrozny fired a 551, and Torento finished with a score of 529.
Junior Liz Wu (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) shot a 525 to lead the women's air rifle team, edging Classmate Susan Wing (Caledonia, N.Y.), who shot a 524. Wing Cheu, in her first match, shot a 476, while freshman Lauren Rothermel (Westfield, Mass.) rounded out Wentworth's shooters with a 457.
Both the mixed team and women's team will await to hear if they earned a berth in the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Championships, while will be held on February 26, at the US Naval Academy.
