Leopard Shooters Pick up Two Wins
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wentworth mixed rifle team claimed a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating Penn State in a Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference match and besting both MIT and Coast Guard in the Bean Pot Invitational, which was also a National Rifle Association Collegiate Sectional Match. The Bean Pot win marked the first time in the event's history Wentworth has captured the title.
In smallbore action, the Leopards shot a 2186, which was 70 points higher than Penn State's 2096. Freshman Alex Zadrozny (Pembroke, Mass.) paced Wentworth with a 557, which was followed by a 551 from senior Brian Appel (Holyoke, Mass.). Junior Pete L'Heureux (Wallingford, Conn.) shot a 546 for the Leopards, while senior Kirstin Torento (Higganum, Conn.) rounded out Wentworth's scorers with a 532 on the day.
Senior Angela Ngo (Chelmsford, Mass.) shot a team-high 568 in air rifle to pace the mixed squad to a 2213, which was ahead of Penn State (2198) and the Leopard women's air rifle team (1907). L'Heureux fired a 552 to finish second on the team, followed by sophomore Mark Vollinger (Hatfield, Mass.), who shot a 548 and Torento, who finished with a 545.
For the women's air rifle team, junior Susan Wing (Rutland, Vt.) shot a team-high 515, which was followed by classmate Liz Wu's (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) 481. Junior Sarah Oakes (Caledonia, N.Y.) shot a 476, while freshman Lauren Rothermel (Westfield, Mass.) completed the scoring with a 435.
Wentworth's combined score of 4399 in smallbore and air rifle edged host MIT (4349) and Coast Guard (4195) in the Bean Pot Invitational, giving the Leopards their first-ever title. Three members of the squad earned NRA sectional medals as Ngo took home a gold medal in air rifle and Zadrozny and Appel claimed silver and bronze in smallbore, respectively. This marked the second straight season Ngo was honored as she earned a silver medal in air rifle at last year's event.
