Rifle Team Competes Against Akron

PALMYRA, Pa. – The Wentworth rifle team shot for the first time in 2011, squaring off against perennial NCAA contender the University of Akron at the Palmyra (Pa.) Sportsmen's Association.  In mixed smallbore action, the Leopards shot a 2129, which was second to the Zips' 2250, while in air rifle, Wentworth's mixed team shot a 2147 to place second behind Akron's 2301, with the women's air rifle team firing a 1942 to finish third.

Freshman Alex Zadrozny (Pembroke, Mass.) continued his impressive rookie season by firing a team-high 551, which placed 14th among 20 smallbore shooters.  Senior Brian Appel (Holyoke, Mass.) shot a 532, while senior Kirstin Torento (Higganum, Conn.) finished with a 528.  Sophomore Mark Vollinger (Hatfield, Mass.) rounded out Wentworth's smallbore scorers with a 518.

Vollinger led Wentworth's mixed air rifle team with a 540, which would place him 15th among 27 air rifle shooters.  Zadrozny was two points behind him with a 538, placing him 16th overall.  Senior Daniel Roberts (East Falmouth, Mass.) shot a 536, while Torento's 533 rounded out the team's top four scores.

Junior Susan Wing (Rutland, Vt.) paced the women's air rifle team with a 527, followed by classmates Sarah Oakes (Caledonia, N.Y.) and Liz Wu (Jamaica Plain, Mass.), who shot a 492 and 483, respectively.  Freshman Lauren Rothermel (Westfield, Mass.) shot a 440 in her first collegiate match to round out the scoring.
