Rifle Team Opens Season at MIT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wentworth's rifle team opened the 2010-11 season with a shoulder-to-shoulder match at MIT. The mixed smallbore team was edged by the host Engineers, 2149-2143, while the mixed air rifle team finished first among three teams by shooting a 2210, which bested both MIT (2161) and the Leopard women's air rifle team (1956).
Freshman Alex Zadrozny (Pembroke, Mass.) had an impressive collegiate debut, leading the Leopards in smallbore with a 542. Following Zadrozny was senior Kirstin Torento (Higganum, Conn.), who was one point behind him with a 541. Sophomore Mark Vollinger (Hatfield, Mass.) and junior Pete L'Heureux (Wallingford, Conn.) also had scores count for Wentworth, shooting a 532 and a 528, respectively.
The same four shooters had scores count in air rifle, helping to lead the Leopards to a 2210. Vollinger fired a 558, followed by Torento, who had a 557. L'Heureux shot a 549, while Zadrozny would shoot a 546.
Leading the way for the women's air rifle team was junior Shaunna Murphy (Winthrop, Mass.), who fired a 515. Classmate Liz Wu (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) also eclipsed 500 with a 507. Juniors Sarah Oakes (Caledonia, N.Y.) and Susan Wing (Rutland, Vt.) completed the Leopards' scores with a 479 and a 455, respectively.
