BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team concluded its season with a pair of losses at Roger Williams. The Hawks took an 11-0 win in game one and a 9-0 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Roger Williams 11, Wentworth 0 (7)
Sophomore Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) did not allow a baserunner through the first six innings of the game and freshman Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) had three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Hawks to the opening-game victory.
Roger Williams scored twice in the first inning on a junior Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) two run single and added five more in the second to take a 7-0 lead, thanks in part to a two-run single by Hobin, along with an RBI single from senior Chris Bosco (Andover, Mass.) and a bases-loaded walk from senior Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.). Sophomore Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) also scored on a balk in the inning.
The Hawks upped their lead to 8-0 in the third on a double from senior Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) and scored three times in the sixth with Hobin delivering an RBI single and senior Eric Damphousse (Litchfield, N.H.) hitting a two-run double.
Sophomore Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) broke up Hewlette's perfect game bid when he led off the seventh inning getting hit by a pitch. Freshman Matt Bishop (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) followed with a single to break up the no-hitter before French moved to third on a double play. However, a groundout kept him there and ended the game.
Hewlette struck out five in improving to 6-1 on the season. Hobin was 3-for-3 while Bosco and Camner had two hits apiece.
Senior Ben Rexford (Lancaster, N.H.) took the loss (0-5), allowing eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits and striking out three in five innings of work.
GAME TWO: Roger Williams 9, Wentworth 0
The Hawks got all the runs they needed in the second inning as Dominguez led off with a single and went to second on a Hobin walk. After an out was recorded, senior Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) tripled both runners in and, with two outs, scored on a junior Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) single.
Roger Williams added a run in the third when Camner, who had led off with a single and moved to second, stole third and came home on an error. An inning later Stone made it 5-0 when he scored on the back end of a double steal.
In the fifth inning Wentworth had runner on second and third with one out as junior Dan Mitchell (Avon, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with one out and, with two outs, freshman Nate Ladeira (Fall River, Mass.) reached on a two-base error which moved Mitchell to third. However, both runners would be stranded after a strikeout.
The Hawks scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning – all with two outs. Stone had an RBI double and Camner had a two-run double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Wentworth loaded the bases in the seventh inning as Mitchell and Ladeira each had singles in the frame. However, a groundout ended the threat. An inning later, the Black & Gold again loaded the bases with one out but a double play on a strikeout kept Wentworth off the scoreboard.
Junior Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) picked up the win (3-0), allowing four hits and striking out 15 in seven innings of work. Camner was 3-for-5 with two RBI while Stone was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Senior Leo Coelho (Marlborough, Mass.) took the loss (3-3), allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out two in three innings of work. Five different players recorded hits for the Leopards.
Wentworth concludes the 2019 campaign with a 9-23 overall record and a 3-11 mark in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
