SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore midfielders Morgan Vogt (Henniker, N.H.) and Andrea Almeida (Newington, Conn.) scored a goal in each half respectively as the sixth-seeded Western New England College women's soccer team defeated seventh-seeded Wentworth 2-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Tournament semifinals on Wednesday (Nov. 4) at Suprenant Field.
Western New England College (10-8-2) will meet either Endicott or Gordon in the championship match on Saturday (Nov. 7).
Wentworth (9-11) had an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead at the 36:37 mark in the first frame as senior goalkeeper Jessica Covino (Bristol, Conn.) came out of the box, but sophomore midfielder Samantha Lewis (Mystic, Conn.) flew to the defense and kicked the ball out of bounds before it crossed the line.
The Golden Bears instead took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when junior forward Heather Mortell (Webster, Mass.) executed a perfect cross from the left side and found Vogt in the corner for the score.
Mortell also assisted the second goal in the 55th minute as she passed it back to Almeida who fired home a shot from 30 yards out for the added insurance.
WNEC out shot Wentworth 18-8 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Covino finished with three saves in the match.
Wentworth sophomore goalie Katherine Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) had seven stops for the Leopards whose four-game win streak comes to an end with the season-ending (9-11) loss.
