DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's golf team placed first at a quad match hosted by Nichols College at the par-72 Dudley Hill Golf Course Monday afternoon. Led by a two-over 74 from first-place finisher Jose Armenteros (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), the Leopards finished five strokes ahead of second-place Elms College. The host Bison had two first-year players in the lineup and placed fourth.
The Leopards' Armenteros, Eric Anderson (Abington, Mass.) and Bryan Cohen (Caracas, Venezuela) were the top three finishers among the 20 players, while the Blazers' David Pianki (West Suffield, Conn.) carded a 79 (+7) to lead Elms and finish tied for third with Cohen.
Armenteros, Anderson, and Cohen each shot a career low, while freshman Robbie Wells Rogers (Colchester, Vt.) carded an 86 in his collegiate debut.
John Pettoruto (Windham, N.H.) shot a 70 to lead Suffolk to a third-place finish with a team 332, while Nichols first-year Tyler Sleeper carded an 83 to pace the Bison in his first collegiate outing.
Matt Quigley (Sturbridge, Mass.) finished one stroke behind Sleeper with an 84, while Brett Fredrickson (Billerica, Mass.) carded an 87. Samuel Scott (Aquinnah, Mass.) shot an 89 and Morgan Billings (Scituate, Mass.) rounded out the Bison squad with a 91 in his first collegiate match.
Wentworth is idle until competing in the opening round of the 2011-2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship on Sept. 22.
